Information for District Councillors and Parish Councils

East West Rail: Haslingfield drop-in event, Friday 9 September

A Community Drop-in Event will be held in Haslingfield Village Hall on Friday 9 September 2022 from 2 pm until 8 pm.

As with our previous drop-ins, the event is designed to give local residents, businesses and stakeholders an opportunity to understand the project development process, anticipated timescales, and speak face-to-face with members of the East West Rail team.

While there won’t be any new information to share at this event – as the team are still reviewing the responses received during the 2021 consultation and considering how the feedback is used to inform plans for the railway – the event will provide an opportunity for the team to engage with people outside the formal consultation process.

Business Support Key Projects Team - South Cambridgeshire Market Webpages

As part of our Business Plan commitment to grow local businesses and economies, one of our objects is to work with parish councils, local communities, and businesses to help establish and expand local markets within the South Cambridgeshire District, as well as finding additional opportunities for businesses to trade. The Economic Development Team is responsible for delivering operationally on our market development work to positively influence and advance community markets throughout the region. So far, this has involved visits to existing markets to explore how they are run and who by, data gathering, and gauging the mood for markets across South Cambridgeshire in a post-Covid landscape.

Our South Cambridgeshire Markets pages have been running for several months now, and we’ve already seen rising interest from villages across our district starting their own newfound markets. Moreover, many unique and gifted independent traders have applied and been subsequently added to our Trader Directory, which is now growing. Nevertheless, we are keen for more marketeers to feature as this project continues. Our overarching goal remains to successfully link market organisers with market traders, help identify additional skills and jobs opportunities, and remain aligned to our Business Plan for the social and economic well-being of business communities and residents.

Once again, we would greatly appreciate if our valued Parish Councils shared these new webpages to promote the exposure of our district’s already ongoing village markets. We believe this will assist in the growth of the market and trader directories whilst also broadening public interest and support for emerging and aspiring small local businesses.

Finally, should any Parish have a desire to begin a market of their own, please do not hesitate to contact us on businesskeyprojects@scambs.gov.ukwith any queries you may have.

4.

5.

Youth Collective at the Museum of Zoology and Cambridge Festival

The University of Cambridge Museums are piloting a Youth Collective at the Museum of Zoology and Cambridge Festival to give young people aged 16-21living in Cambridge or the Cambridgeshire area a chance to learn more about the work of the University and the museums (in particular the Museum of Zoology). Young people will be able to take the lead on designing activities for events like Mill Rd Winter Fair, Cambridge Festival and a museum Late, taking part in all aspects of event management, from planning to delivery to evaluation, as well as accessing training opportunities throughout the project.

Past experience in events or Museums is not important, just an interest in joining in and meeting new people.

The University of Cambridge Museums are keen to involve young people that may not have access to other extracurriculars due to cost or location (support can be provided for transport costs and food provided at meetings). Digital badges will also be awarded through the Cambridge Council’s Region of Learning initiative to demonstrate the skills and achievements of the young people taking part. There is more information here
