         Conservators of the River Cam

Cambridge City Council is required to appoint four

independent members to the Board of the

Conservators of the River Cam for a three-year

                          period starting 1 January 2022.

The Conservators of the River Cam are the Body Corporate who are the Navigation Authority responsible for maintaining the river between the Mill Pond and Bottisham Lock.  This is an extremely busy and important stretch of river used by a variety of boat users adding to the energy of the historical city of Cambridge.

This a voluntary position working alongside Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County Councillors, representatives from Cambridge University and the Environment Agency, board members are currently expected to attend four board meetings per year and could also serve on one or more of the sub-committees.

The role is very similar to a Trustee of a Charity; however, it is a Statutory (Legal) authority which holds legal responsibilities as contained in the Acts and Byelaws. A personal or commercial interest in the river will need to be declared as part of the application process.

Experience and or an awareness of Corporate/Charity Governance, some knowledge of one or more of the following Health and Safety, HR, Finance, UK GDPR, Landlord/landowner responsibilities and other relevant areas of compliance is essential.  You must demonstrate an interest in, and/or have knowledge of, some aspect of the river and its use.

To request an information / application pack please contact Claire Tunnicliffe via email, democratic.services@cambridge.gov.uk

The closing date for receipt of applications is noon on 27 September 2021. Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams.

Waste collection staff attacks
Attacks on waste collection crews are on the rise with 164 refuse workers targeted last year. Many attacks are said to be caused by rubbish not being taken away because it does not comply with guidelines or as a result of motorists being held up. Cllr Darren Rodwell, LGA environment spokesperson, said: “Any attack on a refuse collector, verbal or physical, is completely unacceptable. Nobody should have to experience this shameful behaviour whilst carrying out their job.”

Booster jabs to start within weeks
Booster COVID-19 vaccines for the most vulnerable could start within two weeks, but healthy over-70s may have to wait until more evidence from trials is available. Ministers announced a £1 billion deal yesterday for a further 35 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine to ensure all over-50s have access to extra jabs this year and next. The number of patients in hospital with COVID-19 hit 6,000 yesterday for the first time in more than five months and is up 11 per cent on the total for the previous week.

Average weekly COVID deaths high
Deaths due to COVID-19 are averaging 100 a day across the UK, the highest since March, as scientists warn of a potential increase when schools return next week. Professor Ravi Gupta of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag) said the return to classrooms will likely bring with it a period of high hospital admissions and continuing disruption. Confirmed infections are also rising, with 31,914 cases reported on Monday, seeing the seven-day average increasing by 13 per cent compared to the previous week.
